FILM INFO

The film centers on the love story of Joy and Ethan, Filipino workers based in Hong Kong. Ethan, a bartender, is keen on romantically pursuing Joy, a domestic helper who is wholly dedicated to providing for her family. This movie is directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina under Star Cinema.

CAST: Kathryn Bernardo, Alden Richards, Maymay Entrata, Maricel Laxa, Joross Gamboa, Jameson Blake, Kakai Bautista, Lito Pimentel, Jeff Tam, Lovely Abella, William Lorenzo, Maxine Medina, Jerome Ponce, Pang Mei Sheung & Angela Poliquit.

GENRE: Romance, Drama

WHAT I LIKE?

Hello, Love, Goodbye is actually a cinematic history combining a top-billed actress of ABS-CBN & top-billed actor of GMA under Star Cinema. And yes, the risk was truly worth it. What I like about Hello, Love, Goodbye is its story-line. It was really great to have on-board a story about our beloved OFWs. It’s been a while since movies about them has been given a spotlight in the film industry. With a movie giving respect and tribute to the heroes overseas, HLG features a heart-warming & inspiring story about Joy who is struggling to work harder as a Domestic Helper for her dream in working as a full-tine nurse in Canada. The beginning of the film was really heavy and moving. We saw how tiring Joy is and the situation is really heart-wrenching as well. The movie begins to lighten up when Joy met Ethan. What happens next is a unique love story that has truly entertained the audience all throughout. I can’t help but fall in love with Ethan and Joy as the characters fall in love despite their respective problems, inhibitions and fears in life. The whole movie offers a decent and solid amount of romance, comedy, drama & life-changing lessons that will appeal not only for OFWs but to the rest of the audience – both fans & even non-fans. What I like about Hello, Love, Goodbye is that it tackles many relevant issues very near to the heart of the Filipinos. It is more of a “family movie” more than a romantic comedy one. It still gave utmost value to the basic unit of society. Moreover, its an eye opener to all of us that LOVE IS A SACRIFICE. Reaching your dreams is not a walk in the park. The Setting of HONGKONG was a perfect spot of  a story about dreams, struggles and romance. Shots on the busy streets were executed well. I really love the scenes on the streets especially the scenes on the rural areas. I loved how they depicted the busy side of Hongkong and the rural side too. Cinematography was top-notch. Musical scoring was also great. I really love the Official Soundtrack. Lastly, the film’s strength is its talented actors and actress. Kathryn Bernardo & Alden Richards’ strong on-screen chemistry and acting performances is award-winning and worth every penny. This unlikely pairing worked well. I was like watching a real-life couple acting together. Kathryn is a gem of Philippine Showbiz. She gets better and better every movie. Alden on the other hand, performed his best so far. Aside from a very talented lead, the supporting characters were really helpful in elevating the mood of the movie – Kakai, Lovely, Maymay, Jeffrey & Joross were such a joy to watch. I am also impressed with Hongkong Actors and Actresses in the movie. Overall, Hello, Love, Goodbye is the best Star Cinema Film for 2019 so far and perhaps one of the best Pinoy movies ever made. HLG is worth watching more than twice.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

I really don’t like the fact that I have to watch the movie again just to relieve the feelings and the moments this film gave me.

FEATURING THE VOICES OF: Donald Glover, James Earl Jones, Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen, Beyonce, Chiwitel Eljofor, John Kani, John Oliver & Keegan Michael Key.

GENRE: Animation, Adventure

WHAT I LIKE?

For a classic masterpiece you loved since your childhood, any live adaptations will surely be nostalgic and magical. The LION KING of course didn’t disappoint. The Live Adaptation captures exactly how it should be. With some pretty impressive Visuals and Cinematography, the Live Adaptation depicted the African Wilderness precisely. The CIRCLE OF LIFE Opening Number itself is more than enough. I am also impressed with the Musical Numbers and Musical Scoring on the film. It was executed well and I am loving Beyonce even more too. With a great combination and formula of adventure, drama, comedy & romance, The Lion King is truly a family-friendly film. Watching the Lion King Again brings back so many memories and joy we felt when it first aired years ago. For fans, I am surely almost all will be pleased with this film. For me, it was worth-watching.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

Somehow, its not as classic as the first one but hey, the whole REMAKE is such a joy to watch.

FILM INFO

A lonely woman befriends a group of teenagers and decides to let them party at her house. Just when the kids think their luck couldn’t get any better, things start happening that make them question the intention of their host. This is directed by Tate Taylor under Universal Pictures.

CAST: Octavia Spencer, Juliette Lewis, Diana Silvers, Luke Evans, McKaley Miller, Correy Fogelmanis, Missi Pyle, Dante Brown & Gianni Paolo.

GENRE: Thriller

WHAT I LIKE?

The reason why I watched Ma is OCTAVIA SPENCER. Acting-wise, Octavia delivered and saved the entire film the least.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

“Ma” put into waste an impressive performance from Octavia Spencer from a film that could have ventured a little bit darker and deeper. I found the plot to be shallow and very lackluster. The whole film felt like a lazy thriller that was hoping to benefit from enough creepy antics but sooner failed. Plot-wise, it was utterly predictable and unimaginative. They could have creatively played around how creepy and controlling “Ma” is but they gave us a lacking chops of thrillers that are either forgettable or funny at some point. I wish it could have been bloodier at least. So far, Ma is really a disappointing flick in terms of story material. Acting chops was average but I find some terrible acting here. How I wish they gave Octavia Spencer a more sensible if not a crazy enough plot. She deserves better than this.

FILM INFO

Our friendly neighborhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent. This movie is directed by Jon Watts under Sony Pictures.

CAST: Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Jake Gyllenhaal, Cobie Smulders, JB Smoove, Jacob Batalon, Matin Starr, Tony Revolori, Marisa Tomei, Angourie Rice, Numan Car.

GENRE: Action, Adventure

WHAT I LIKE?

Perhaps, this is the best Spider-Man Franchise ever. Far From Home is a visual spectacle that delivers everything you wanted from an MCU Film along with impressive cinematography and performances from its lead actors. First of all, the Plot picked up after The BLIP (The Thanos thing) and after the death of Iron Man. What I like about Far From Home is the connection it created in dealing with the loss of Tony Stark and the pressures it placed on Spider-Man. Given the fact that Peter Parker is literally young, I really commend the arc of the film where he fell in love with a girl and his vulnerability being a young teenager and an Avenger as well. It shows a great conflict of his character and the situation he’s into. Setting was also great. I loved the scenes in London and in Prague. Visually-speaking, Far From Home never disappoints. It was truly a spectacle of top-notch editing & action sequences worth every penny of your admission ticket. Acting chops are also satisfying. Personally, I am starting to let go Andrew Garfield as the best Spider-Man because of Tom Holland’s performance in Far From Home. Moreover, I really the chemistry of Tom & Zendaya here. Their charm and cuteness are all over the screen. I also loved Peter’s Squad in the movie. Spider-Man: Far From Home delivers a decent amount of entertainment, thrills and comedy we should be enjoying from a good Spider-Man movie. For me, this is highly-recommended to everyone who is either a fan of MCU or a fan of Spidey.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

Well, the shirtless Tom Holland deserves a longer screen time MCU! C’mon!

Annabelle Comes Home

FILM INFO

Determined to keep Annabelle from wreaking more havoc, Ed and Lorraine Warren bring the possessed doll to the locked artifacts room in their home, placing her “safely” behind sacred glass and enlisting a priest’s holy blessing. But an unholy night of horror awaits as Annabelle awakens the evil spirits in the room, who all set their sights on a new target — the Warrens’ ten-year-old daughter, Judy, and her friends. This is directed by Gary Dauberman under New Line Cinema.

CAST: McLena Grace, Madison Iseman, Katie Sarife, Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Steve Coulter, Michael Cimino & Samara Lee.

GENRE: Horror

WHAT I LIKE?

Annabelle has that solid scares & thrills you will probably enjoy on a average Annabelle flick. But….

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

From all the disappointing Annabelle Flick in the Conjuring Universe, Annabelle Comes Home has some decent and redeeming sort of thing but for me, this latest installment is tiring, lazy and very formulaic. What I don’t like about this film is that its actually empty. Full of unnecessary scares and dangling plots that actually don’t make sense at all. Aside from its very limited setting and point if view, Annabelle Comes Home is just some random shit wherein Annabelle was able to set free from the room and do some horrific things for the next minutes of its screening time. Aside from The Warrens’ less screening time, the scares are becoming too predictable. For me, its now time to put Annabelle to its long deserved rest.

Child’s Play (2019)

FILM INFO

Child’s Play is a story about mother who gave her son a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature. This 1980’s remake is directed by Lars Klevberg under Orion Pictures.

CAST: Aubrey Plaza, Gabriel Bateman, Brian Tyree Henry, Mark Hamill, Tim Matheson & David Lewis.

GENRE: Horror

WHAT I LIKE?

Child’s Play Modern Remake is truly a worthy masterpiece for a Horror Classic I loved since childhood. Wit a handful of disappointing installments, the 2019 Child’s Play was able to introduce a whole new playing field without sacrificing the comedy, thrills and gore we enjoyed on a Child’s Play film. First of all, it was a bold move to re-introduce Chucky in a modern world wherein there are no supernatural powers who will let him kill people. I really loved the idea of a talking doll wired into Internet or Cloud for instructions. It was truly timely in a era where everything is accessible online. The movie started with a premise that Chucky was a whole new different device. It was more intelligent & very vulnerable. At least, we are spared with supernatural background that made it a little bit goofy at times on its previous installments. What I like about Child’s Play is its signature kills and death scenes. For the 2019 version, it really did not disappoint in delivering enough gore & violence to showcase how deadly Chucky can be. Also, the recent Child’s Play still have those comedy blended well with horror and thrills that made the whole movie experience entertaining and frightening as well. They may have unknown Actors and Actresses but I believe they have done a great job here. I admire the lead child who played Andy. Gabriel Bateman was perfect for the role. With a great serving of humor, gore, inventive kills and thrills, Child’s Play is truly a worthy modern adaptation of this Classic Killer Doll.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

As a die-hard Chucky Fan, I am really pleased & satisfied.

FILM INFO

When Bonnie takes the whole gang on her family’s road trip excursion, Woody ends up on an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep (voice of Annie Potts). After years of being on her own, Bo’s adventurous spirit and life on the road belie her delicate porcelain exterior. As Woody and Bo realize they’re worlds apart when it comes to life as a toy, they soon come to find that’s the least of their worries. The 4th Installment of Toy Story is directed by Josh Cooley under Disney Pixar.

Featuring the VOICES of: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, Tony Hale, Keegan Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Christina Hendricks, Keanu Reeves, Bonnie Hunt, Don Rickles, Jeff Garlin & Jodi Benson

GENRE: Animated Feature

WHAT I LIKE?

Toy Story 4 truly honored its roots especially to the service they have rendered to Andy down to their new kid Bonnie. Aside from that, they were able to send a heart-warming message and a very sentimental turnaround of the whole mission and life of Woody. What I like about the 4th installment is that it never get tired of going through the same plot and conflict thus presenting it in a very calm manner this time. It may be less adventurous this time but the movie gave a worthy resolution especially to Woody. I really loved how the contrast of stories from both “toy worlds” complimented on the final scene. Everything was just smooth and light to carry. I loved how they used a Semi-Villain in the film. At least, there were no exaggerations this time. I think they focused purely on emotions paving way for that resolution we all wanted. It still have the characters we loved but “Forky” as the newest Toy character is just adorable & funny. Aside from an impressive visuals and Cinematography, Toy Story 4 really maintained its branding to be one of the most child-friendly Animated Films Hollywood has ever made serving a decent and generous amount of comedy, thrills & lessons that could appeal not only to younger generations but across mature audiences as well.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

If you are expecting some epic adventure this time, Toy Story 4 may not be your cup of tea.
