FILM INFO

Child’s Play is a story about mother who gave her son a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature. This 1980’s remake is directed by Lars Klevberg under Orion Pictures.

CAST: Aubrey Plaza, Gabriel Bateman, Brian Tyree Henry, Mark Hamill, Tim Matheson & David Lewis.

GENRE: Horror

WHAT I LIKE?

Child’s Play Modern Remake is truly a worthy masterpiece for a Horror Classic I loved since childhood. Wit a handful of disappointing installments, the 2019 Child’s Play was able to introduce a whole new playing field without sacrificing the comedy, thrills and gore we enjoyed on a Child’s Play film. First of all, it was a bold move to re-introduce Chucky in a modern world wherein there are no supernatural powers who will let him kill people. I really loved the idea of a talking doll wired into Internet or Cloud for instructions. It was truly timely in a era where everything is accessible online. The movie started with a premise that Chucky was a whole new different device. It was more intelligent & very vulnerable. At least, we are spared with supernatural background that made it a little bit goofy at times on its previous installments. What I like about Child’s Play is its signature kills and death scenes. For the 2019 version, it really did not disappoint in delivering enough gore & violence to showcase how deadly Chucky can be. Also, the recent Child’s Play still have those comedy blended well with horror and thrills that made the whole movie experience entertaining and frightening as well. They may have unknown Actors and Actresses but I believe they have done a great job here. I admire the lead child who played Andy. Gabriel Bateman was perfect for the role. With a great serving of humor, gore, inventive kills and thrills, Child’s Play is truly a worthy modern adaptation of this Classic Killer Doll.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

As a die-hard Chucky Fan, I am really pleased & satisfied.

FILM INFO

When Bonnie takes the whole gang on her family’s road trip excursion, Woody ends up on an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep (voice of Annie Potts). After years of being on her own, Bo’s adventurous spirit and life on the road belie her delicate porcelain exterior. As Woody and Bo realize they’re worlds apart when it comes to life as a toy, they soon come to find that’s the least of their worries. The 4th Installment of Toy Story is directed by Josh Cooley under Disney Pixar.

Featuring the VOICES of: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, Tony Hale, Keegan Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Christina Hendricks, Keanu Reeves, Bonnie Hunt, Don Rickles, Jeff Garlin & Jodi Benson

GENRE: Animated Feature

WHAT I LIKE?

Toy Story 4 truly honored its roots especially to the service they have rendered to Andy down to their new kid Bonnie. Aside from that, they were able to send a heart-warming message and a very sentimental turnaround of the whole mission and life of Woody. What I like about the 4th installment is that it never get tired of going through the same plot and conflict thus presenting it in a very calm manner this time. It may be less adventurous this time but the movie gave a worthy resolution especially to Woody. I really loved how the contrast of stories from both “toy worlds” complimented on the final scene. Everything was just smooth and light to carry. I loved how they used a Semi-Villain in the film. At least, there were no exaggerations this time. I think they focused purely on emotions paving way for that resolution we all wanted. It still have the characters we loved but “Forky” as the newest Toy character is just adorable & funny. Aside from an impressive visuals and Cinematography, Toy Story 4 really maintained its branding to be one of the most child-friendly Animated Films Hollywood has ever made serving a decent and generous amount of comedy, thrills & lessons that could appeal not only to younger generations but across mature audiences as well.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

If you are expecting some epic adventure this time, Toy Story 4 may not be your cup of tea.

FILM INFO

After learning that a group of doctors were killed by super natural forces, Fathers Salvador and Benedicto will have their faith tested when they are tasked to perform an exorcism on a possessed woman named Clarita. Meanwhile, a photojournalist investigates the truth about Clarita’s possession and helps the two priests perform the exorcism. In their journey to help Clarita, they will encounter demonic obstacles that will prevent them from performing the exorcism. This movie is directed by Derick Cabrido under Black Sheep Films.

CAST: Jodi Sta. Maria, Ricky Davao, Arron Villaflor, Alyssa Muhlach, Yayo Aguila & Nonie Buencamino

GENRE: Horror, Mystery

WHAT I LIKE?

Inspired by true events, Clarita invested on the fact that somehow it happened in the past and it can happen even up to now. Clarita benefits mostly on the impressive acting performance of Jodi Sta. Maria alongside with brilliantly-executed prosthetic & sound effects. This is very similar with Aubrey Miles’ Sanib in which the exorcism scene is really haunting & memorable. It has some pretty good jump out scares and some spine-chilling moments that is quite unique too. I really commend some transitions in the film. The director creatively played well in blending the present situation as it slowly transitions to the past. Clarita is one of those Pinoy Horror films you should be proud of.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

Clarita’s storytelling is a bit messy & cluttered. How I wish the narrative content was given emphasis since we all wanted to know the real story of Clarita and her dark past. It did deliver some chilling moments but I think the whole movie is stretched. I expected so much considering that the story of Clarita is really a good material to begin with. For me, they haven’t utilized much the story line especially the back story. What is also lacking in the movie is the classic horror feels and the terrifying moments you should be feeling during the exorcism scenes. Though, I still must give it to Aubrey Mile’s SANIB on this one. But, Clarita is still a good flick after all.

FILM INFO

The Men in Black have always protected the Earth from the scum of the universe. In this new adventure, they tackle their biggest, most global threat to date: a mole in the Men in Black organization. This movie is directed by F. Gary Gray under Columbia Pictures.

CAST: Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Liam Neeson, Rebecca Ferguson, Emma Thompson, Kumail Nanjiani, Rafe Spall, Spencer Wilding & Marcy Harriel.

GENRE: Action, Adventure

WHAT I LIKE?

What I like about MIB International benefits from a very effective onscreen chemistry of Hemsworth & Thompson which actually had its debut during Thor Ragnarok. Aside from that, there were some interesting MIB scenes that are truly unique for the franchise. At least, there were some notable highs for the film.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

Men In Black International is quite a big a disappointment from a franchise that has been one the best classic sci-fi spy-adventure films ever made in Hollywood. The latest installement is uninspiring & forgettable. In as much we wanted to fall in love of Tessa & Chris together, they are consumed with a lackluster plot & predictable conflict material. Moreover, they failed to fully utilize comedy and action sequences in most parts. It felt like they could have ventured into the fun & adventurous side even more just like what the old MIB Franchise promises to deliver. In their extreme effort to relive the classic feels, MIB International falls flat in so many ways. The plot didn’t developed well because it is shallow to begin with, Everything seems to be in rush.

FEATURING THE VOICES OF: Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, Harrison Ford, Patton Oswalt, Eric Stonestreet, Jenny Slate, Lake Bell, Hannibal Buress & Bobby Moynihan.

GENRE: Animated Movie, Comedy

Check my Movie Review for their First Film: The Secret Life of Pets

WHAT I LIKE?

The Secret Life of Pets 2 delivers the same entertainment we loved from the first installment. What I like about this film is its consistency of the setting and the fun brought by a great variety of pet characters. I really commend the Visuals & the Cinematography. Plus, the Musical Scoring is still as good as the first one. At some point, I felt like a kid laughing over some scenes in the movie. For a kiddie movie, The Secret Life of Pets 2 is entertaining & visually-compelling.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

I may adore the Visuals and the Entertainment but The Secret Life of Pets 2 offers nothing new on the plate. With its 2nd installment, I expected the storyline to go a notch higher. It was pretty shallow for me. At some point going that lousy climax, the whole movie is forgettable and will only be as good as your first round of popcorn. It also lacked an inspiring content that the first movie nailed. Moreover, the scene on the farm with Rooster could have been developed even further as it is essential in the overall plot. It felt like the Rooster Scene was placed to fill in the movie’s running time. If you are in for some kiddie popcorn entertainment, you can watch The Secret Life of Pets 2. Or you may not.

FILM INFO

X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy. This Final X-Men Movie is directed by Simon Kinberg under 20th Century Fox.
CAST: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, SOphie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Lodi Smith McPhee, Evan Peters, Jessica Chastain.
GENRE: Action, Adventure

WHAT I LIKE?

Well, the fact that Quicksilver is here despite a limited screen time makes it bearable to say the least.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is truly a disappointing way to end the X-Men Franchise. I am not a fan of the comics so my Movie review will be based on the movie alone. For me, it was good but I think they really lack the most essential thing in any superhero movie – the PLOT. The whole concept of the Dark Phoenix was put into waste through shallow interpretations & lack of emphasis & intensity considering that this Arc of the X-Men  Series should be very terrifying & devastating. It lacked the catastrophic feel we should be worrying about the Dark Phoenix. What happens in the movie are tidbits of action sequences and some poor characterization of some of the leads & supporting roles. I think they could have expounded the Solar Flare’s background so as to contribute on the fact that Jean Grey could posses the most powerful tool among all mutants. Sadly, I didn’t feel that way. It felt like the movie was a compliance to just end the Franchise with a lackluster installment. For me, you can pass this on cinemas.

FILM INFO

Godzilla 2 follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species – thought to be mere myths – rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance. This movie is directed by Michael Dougherty under Warner Bros Pictures.

CASTS: Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, Ziyi Zhang & Aisha Hinds

GENRE: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

WHAT I LIKE?

Godzilla: King of the Monsters never disappoints to be a worthy sequel of the revamped and modernized Godzilla Monster Universe. For me, it lived to up its tagline – King of the Monsters. What I like about Godzilla 2 is the Production & Visuals. Given the fact that this is a huge movie literally, expectations are high and yes, they did not disappoint. Visuals are top-notch and impressive. I really like how the Titans were portrayed in the film. The whole movie was a cinematic spectacle of thrills, impressive monster creations & action sequences that will surely satisfy your hunger for Kaiju Battles. From beginning to end, the movie has sustain its momentum towards that epic and emotional climax we all deserve. I was at awe and literally clapping during the monster fight scenes. GAAAH! This is what I pay for. I really commend the Production Crew for bringing this cinematic experience to a whole new level. Talking about Visuals & Cinematography, its already worth the price of your admission ticket. Story-wise, it picks up with the premise of Titans and determining who are against and along with the human race. The Human Survival Intervention & Family Drama was injected on decent amount so as to give that emotional connection with the audience. Good thing they did not make it too cringy. Moreover, actors and actresses were great. I really love Vera’s performance on the movie. Millie was also impressive. Also, its great to see Asian Characters taking over longer screen time in the movie. Overall, Godzilla King of the Monsters is highly-entertaining & visually-engaging &  masterpiece. For me, this is the better Godzilla movie than its predecessor.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

C’mon! ALL HAIL TO THE KING!
