WHAT I LIKE?

Well, the fact that Quicksilver is here despite a limited screen time makes it bearable to say the least.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is truly a disappointing way to end the X-Men Franchise. I am not a fan of the comics so my Movie review will be based on the movie alone. For me, it was good but I think they really lack the most essential thing in any superhero movie – the PLOT. The whole concept of the Dark Phoenix was put into waste through shallow interpretations & lack of emphasis & intensity considering that this Arc of the X-Men  Series should be very terrifying & devastating. It lacked the catastrophic feel we should be worrying about the Dark Phoenix. What happens in the movie are tidbits of action sequences and some poor characterization of some of the leads & supporting roles. I think they could have expounded the Solar Flare’s background so as to contribute on the fact that Jean Grey could posses the most powerful tool among all mutants. Sadly, I didn’t feel that way. It felt like the movie was a compliance to just end the Franchise with a lackluster installment. For me, you can pass this on cinemas.

Generally better than Prometheus but Alien Covenant was a bit lost.

FILM INFO

Members of the colony ship Covenant discovered an chartered paradise. The mysterious world soon turns dark and dangerous when a hostile alien life-form forces the crew into a deadly fight for survival. This movie is directed by Ridley Scott under 20th Century Fox.

Cast: Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Demian Bichir, Danny McBride, Jussie Smollett, Amy Seimetz, Carmen Ejogo & Callie Hernandez.

Genre: Action-Adventure, Science-Fiction, Mystery

Here are some alien-inspired movies as well: Riveting. Thrilling. Superbly-acted. LIFE gave all other films of the genre a run for their money. / Arrival redefined Sci-fi with mind-blowing, imaginative & subtle formula.

WHAT I LIKE?

Alien Covenant is perhaps one of the visually-entertaining franchise of Ridley Scott in the Alien universe. The movie is a sequel of Prometheus, the latest movie in the universe. If you haven’t seen Prometheus, you might have a problem catching up with the story since much of it has a direct reference to its predecessor. The story started of course in a space setting. I really like the editing and production design. The ship is by far the best in the Alien universe. Also, the idea of the ship carrying colonizers for a new planet for human beings make the premise of the whole movie interesting too. Its like a human civilization from another planet kind of thing. This time, it has a larger crew in the ship. Generally, the plot would be easier to follow if you have background from the latest Alien movie of Scott. I really like the scenes in the unchartered planet too. Loved the setting. Its very eerie, dark and very isolated too. Cinematography is great too. Suspense is presented on chunks but are all spot on. Death scenese are gory and shocking too. Given that the crew is in large number, scenes are executed fast leaving you at the edge-of-your-seat during these moments. Also, much emotional attachments were established with the whole cast giving audience an affecting attention to the characters as they die.  The first half of the movie is packed with suspense-filled scenes and the second half will try to answer some of your questions about the plot. For the record, this is by far the most disturbing Alien movie in terms of death scenes. Blood, body organs and broken bones are everywhere. The Aliens featured were scary as hell too. The ending will leave you with such questions too though I loved the suspense and tension as it builds towards that shocking and confusing twist too. As a whole, if you are a fan of Ridley Scott’s Alien movies, you will surely love Alien Covenant.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

Alien Covenant was a bit lost for me. This was better as a straight horror-suspense movie just like the previous Alien Movies. For me, it did not answer some of the major questions raised in Promotheus. The plot of Alien Covenant will either confuse you or bore you specially if you haven’t seen the past movies in the universe. Also the movie is cluttered with many characters. Despite a good tension of horror on their deaths, I find them as dangling modifiers covering the loop hole of the movie – the premise itself. Its a bit formulaic and very familiar too. Generally, its still a great film. I still it enjoyed though I have so many questions on the twist. But of course, I won’t spoil it.

Assassin’s Creed

a69cb0a3-c714-4f2f-9e0a-47fcd4f7ae78-1012-000000a5405e6150_tmp

This review is from a POV of a NON-GAMER.

Assassin’s Creed’s impressive action sequences, good visuals and good cinematography are not enough to cover the film’s incoherent storytelling and confusing plot. Well, it should have been pleasing to fans of the games. But taking into consideration its appeal to non-gamers, the film would bring disappointments as the backstory was not properly laid down considering its the first installment. I wish the film has shed some focus on the Assassin’s background and the importance and value of the apple. Aside from its dark theme, the film showcased more of action scenes and violence covering up its lousy storyline.

What I liked about Assassin’s Creed

The good thing about AC is its faithfulness to the video games as reviewed by Gamer fans. Personally, I am impressed with the action scenes. I must commend the longest and continuous action sequence that was well-executed from stunts to amazing areal shots. I also loved the Production design especially the Spanish Inquisition setting. Somehow, the film was able to give justice on that aspect. Also, Michael Fassbender made a great job in his portrayal. Nevertheless, the film was good though it failed to connect at me until the end.

3/5 stars.
