WHAT I LIKE?

Alien Covenant is perhaps one of the visually-entertaining franchise of Ridley Scott in the Alien universe. The movie is a sequel of Prometheus, the latest movie in the universe. If you haven’t seen Prometheus, you might have a problem catching up with the story since much of it has a direct reference to its predecessor. The story started of course in a space setting. I really like the editing and production design. The ship is by far the best in the Alien universe. Also, the idea of the ship carrying colonizers for a new planet for human beings make the premise of the whole movie interesting too. Its like a human civilization from another planet kind of thing. This time, it has a larger crew in the ship. Generally, the plot would be easier to follow if you have background from the latest Alien movie of Scott. I really like the scenes in the unchartered planet too. Loved the setting. Its very eerie, dark and very isolated too. Cinematography is great too. Suspense is presented on chunks but are all spot on. Death scenese are gory and shocking too. Given that the crew is in large number, scenes are executed fast leaving you at the edge-of-your-seat during these moments. Also, much emotional attachments were established with the whole cast giving audience an affecting attention to the characters as they die.  The first half of the movie is packed with suspense-filled scenes and the second half will try to answer some of your questions about the plot. For the record, this is by far the most disturbing Alien movie in terms of death scenes. Blood, body organs and broken bones are everywhere. The Aliens featured were scary as hell too. The ending will leave you with such questions too though I loved the suspense and tension as it builds towards that shocking and confusing twist too. As a whole, if you are a fan of Ridley Scott’s Alien movies, you will surely love Alien Covenant.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

Alien Covenant was a bit lost for me. This was better as a straight horror-suspense movie just like the previous Alien Movies. For me, it did not answer some of the major questions raised in Promotheus. The plot of Alien Covenant will either confuse you or bore you specially if you haven’t seen the past movies in the universe. Also the movie is cluttered with many characters. Despite a good tension of horror on their deaths, I find them as dangling modifiers covering the loop hole of the movie – the premise itself. Its a bit formulaic and very familiar too. Generally, its still a great film. I still it enjoyed though I have so many questions on the twist. But of course, I won’t spoil it.

“LIFE” tells a  story of a six-member crew of the International Space Station currently orbiting the Earth and are on their journey to discover a breakthrough discovery and evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. Upon their discovery and research, they will face thrilling and unintended consequences that will may risk all their lives even all of humanity. This space-film is directed by Daniel Espinosa under Columbia Pictures.

CASTS: Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, Olga Dihovichnaya, Hiroyuki Sanada & Ariyon Bakare

GENRE: Action, Adventure, Thriller

Here’s my review of a past Ryan Reynolds’ Film: DEADPOOL.

WHAT I LIKE?

LIFE may have a similar formula among all other Space films in Hollywood and a resemblance to Aliens which is somehow a closer comparison but for me, LIFE has gave a fresher and more direct take on this extraterrestrial formula that made it my MOST FAVORITE SPACE MOVIE OF ALL TIME after The Martian, The Space Between Us, Passengers, Gravity, Interstellar, Alien and Armageddon.

This fast-paced movie veered away from any introductory scenes on earth stuff or even spared us from the backstories of the 6 crew. It went directly to the whole nutshell to begin with. Its a full-length Space Film Setting just like GRAVITY. What makes it unique is that the story was directly presented into our very own eyes. Its a study of a certain specie from Mars. What I loved about LIFE is that story-line is not very much complicated. It is easy to digest as whole. The film will instead take you to a very thrilling and disturbing ride from its turning point towards its very shocking ending that I saw coming but actually did not expect the movie will end like that. LIFE is a riveting piece that offers a very decent edge-of-the-seat entertainment. At times, I screamed at few scenes. The scenes just gave me those space thrills I loved from Gravity and Aliens. The Alien figure was also presented a much newer approach which is more or less scientific. Somehow, it gave the movie ALIENS a modern prequel. LIFE somehow introduced the origins of it. I am amazed and impressed with Setting and Production design as well. They have a nice setting on the earth’s orbit (outside space) and a very good Space ship setting too. Its not too overrated at least. LIFE’s major win is its wonderfully acted performances from Gyllenhaal, Reynolds and Dihovichnaya. I must commend all other characters too. I just felt the intensity of every scenes especially those scenes that they are fighting for their lives. Its very emotionally-compelling too. Most of the scenes affected me in some way. I had a good time watching it. It may have the similar formula but the approach in terms of direct storytelling, a notch higher alien interpretation and greatly acted performances made LIFE as my most favorite film in the genre to date. Highly-recommended for all those thriller-seekers out there.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

If you keep on comparing it with ALIENS and all other Space Movies, you will see a lot of cliches actually. But I don’t have a problem with that. We all have different takes on movies like this. Hey, I enjoyed the movie.

WHAT I LIKE?

Cheers to one of the most inspiring movie ever made about Space and the science behind. Hidden Figures is not just a celebration of technological breakthrough in space but also a celebration of the brilliant minds behind NASA. These minds include 3 women who became pillar and survived the journey behind the American space mission. I loved the tone of the film. Everything was laid on its perfect timing and succession. I commend how the Director pulled off this amazing and inspiring untold story into a cinematic interpretation that will give us a vivid picture of what happened beyond the mission and brought us into the critical numbers and computations. It may be technical at times but the presentation was done in a very engaging and compelling manner wherein it is actially enjoyable at most times. Aside from showing a great view on racism and gender bias at that time, the film was able to bring us inside NASA itself. The film’s major win lies on its very talented and award-wining cast spearheaded by Taraji, Octavia, Janelle, Kevin and Kirsten. Cheers to some amazing acting to all the characters. The film gave me a very satisfying journey that has also imparted realizations and lessons to everyone. The climax was good. The plot was mixed well with a little background of the characters and has done impressive job on the space mission part. It was so surreal to see Hidden Figures on the big screen. Worth-watching.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

Naaaah. Can’t point out any negative.

Here’s my latest review for Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

WHAT I LIKE?

Yes, the title of this blog is right. After The Martian, I will have to give The Space between us the title of the lightest space-inspired movie to date. This romantic and dramatic film catches so many emotions. The film will inspire you, make you fall in love and send a pinch in your heart. Its unique love story was well-executed and it was well-justified until the end. It started on a space mission setting and it beautifully set the mood right until the climax. I am impressed with the Production design especially during their space mission and their stay in Mars itself. Not too keen about space technicalities but I believe they have done it right. Loved how the director utilized the character on earth as well. Their engaging conversations and simple scenarios got me. I loved their locations too. The plot was laid well. Conflicts were also right with its slow phasing as a whole. The film’s strength lies with Asa Butterfield who effectively portrayed a naive teenager setting foot on earth. He was just lovable, charming and talented. The supporting casts were also good. It was an over-all feel-good movie that will inspire you and  make you smile from beginnning to end.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

Naaah! I love Asa Butterfield. That’s all.
