WHAT I LIKE?

Overlord is an interesting and effective mix of war violence and some pretty disturbing and horrifying zombie scares. Finally, the Zombie Genre has been reinvented with subplots that are actually quite a good move for you to get entertained and glued from beginning to end. Overlord plays on the American VS German War backdrop. Basically, the plot material is strongly gearing towards a war film. What I love about Overlord is its  creative approach in inserting the zombie formula through the laboratory of the German troops. The first part was perfectly executed for me. The movie directly started off the American soldiers on board their plane as they reach the German soil. The action sequences and the thrills of explosions & the continous shot of the main character falling from the plane was pretty cool and visually-engaging. The horror of the surviving troops began when they went over their mission to take over the control tower. The movie picked up some war moments most of the time as the entire zombie thing is some sort of a disturbing twist. The fun and thrilling part of the movie is when they discovered the dark secret of the place. Despite having a modest amount of zombie formula, Overlord never fails to entertain its audience with enough gore and terrifying sequences that scared the shit out of me. There were a decent jumpout scares in the movie. I am quite impressed with the prosthetics and production design. Cinematography was superb and the whole war setting was great. For me, it is one of those enjoyable war-inspired thrillers and a good addition to the zombie genre.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE?

For me, I expected less with Overlord so I think I came out the cinema very satisfied.

The Girl with all the Gifts

img_1023

The Girl with all the Gifts attempt to the zombie bandwagon is somehow a hit and miss for me. The film is a lighter approach on gore and thrills and more on a deeper aspect of the epidemic that strucked the world. It started a little bit fast actually. The film veered away from the action and focused on the relationship of the characters. It still has those thrills we expect from a Zombie film but it was somehow lacking spectacle. This zombie apocalyptic film was done with intelligence and depth as it gave an interesting adventure in finding the cure of the disease. It will surely disappoint those thrill-lover audiences but the film has some decent serving of those. Well, much of the story’s turning points and vital parts were explained via the characters’ conversations most of the time. On the otherhand, the actors were good also. If there’s one great thing about this flick, it is the most accurate representation of how should a zombie be. A few modest screams. Giving it 3.5/5 stars.

Train to Busan

Train to Busan is a film that make me proud as an Asian. Truly, this is the best Asian Film ever made and perhaps one of the best also in terms of Hollywood for the Zombie genre. Everything in the movie is impressive. From its Cinematography, Visuals, Production design, Sound Effects and even the plot itself. I loved the way the story was presented. Action scenes are also superb. Loved also those thrills that made it more exciting. What I loved the most is the Asian feel – this is Drama of course. The mix of drama in the film is heartwarming and blended well with the whole storyline. A zombie movie with a HEART. Aside from decent screams, the movie got me some bucket of tears too. Highly-recommended. 5/5 stars
